Today is the 4th anniversary of one of the most magical days of my life.
Have you ever had one of those magical days that are so memorable that every detail remains vivid and fresh in your mind?
They are memories that we will never forget.
We expect these magical moments on days like our wedding, or the birth of a child, but sometimes they are unexpected and we don’t realize their impact until later.
I’ve learned over the years that the more time that has elapsed, the more special the day is.
Today I want to share with you one of the MOST special days of my life, and that is the day we got Obi.
The Day We Got Obi
Many of you have literally watched my dog Obi grow up over the years. He is like my dear first-born son, and I still remember the day we got him.
I love Obi very much.
He is in my lap as I write this, but what makes it so special is the phase of my life that I was in when I got him.
My Version of Marley and Me
If you have never read the book Marley and Me, I highly recommend it.
Read the book because the movie leaves out a lot of small details that make the book very special.
I read the book a month before we got Obi, and it made me cry because it reminded me of my life and what Kelly and I had gone through.
In 2008, my life was just like Marley and Me.
A New Phase in Life
A few months before we got Obi, I had just hit a milestone in my network marketing business and achieved Diamond Director.
It was a result of more than 4½ years of focus, discipline and hard work, and after making Diamond Director, it was time to relax and enjoy life a little.
Kelly and I had exciting and fun times as we went through a series of rewarding events in only a few short months.
To sum it up, in just four months, we got married, went on two honeymoons–Bora Bora and then to Beijing for the Olympics–and then purchased and moved into our new home.
I still remember how excited I was when we got the keys to our new house. It was a huge upgrade to go from a tiny 600 sq. ft. apartment on the noisy Bundy Avenue to our four-bedroom 2,500 sq. ft. house.
The best part was that I finally had a room to use as a real home office. It definitely beat working on a cramped table that was part foyer, part living room and part of the kitchen.
The Missing Piece for Newlyweds in a New House
The house was nice but something was missing…
Obi was the missing piece.
Kelly and I had always wanted to get a Bichon Frise, but we knew it would be unfair to any animal to live in a tiny apartment that was way too cramped already.
Plus, I wanted to do it the right way and spend tons of time training and playing with my new “best friend.” I didn’t want to have a dog that I had no time for.
Since I’m such a self-development fanatic, I even went out and read almost every book on raising and training Bichon Frise dogs. I wanted to be prepared!
And in late 2008, the rewards of network marketing allowed me the time and money to do what I wanted.
It was time to get our Bichon Frise pup!
Personally Transported from 974 Miles Away
We shopped around and looked for a good breeder that we could trust who also had puppies available.
Finally in December 2008, a breeder contacted us and told us that they had pups available, but we could only get them in late January since the puppies were too young. We saw pictures and got so excited. We waited anxiously for the magical day of January 30th to arrive.
One of the Most Memorable Days in My Life
I remember all the details of the magical day.
It is one of the happiest days of my life, and I will never forget it.
The night before, Kelly and I were so excited that we couldn’t even sleep.
The breeder had already shown us pictures of Obi so we knew how he looked like!
The next morning, I did my morning yoga at the park and realized that my life would change forever in a few hours. I still remember thinking about that and saying a prayer of gratitude.
The next thing you know, Obi was here!
The breeders had driven over 974 miles to deliver Obi. They arrived 26 minutes early 10:04am. Kelly wasn’t home yet. The breeders handed me Obi and asked me if I had a name, and I told them Kelly and I had decided on the name “Obi” a long time ago.
As I held Obi for the first time he instantly licked my hand. He was so light and looked nothing like the way he does today. Obi had a brother that was also for sale, but after spending three minutes with him licking my hand and bonding with me, how could I turn down Obi?
Kelly was out because the breeders had arrived early. When she got home to meet Obi for the first time, Obi got super excited and started prancing around the house!
The rest of the day was spent taking pictures, cooking chicken breast for Obi, and taking him out.
The only things I have now are pictures, videos and the memories.
At the time, little did I know that I would frequently think back to this day and remember how Obi licked my hand the first time I held him.
It makes me happy just to think about it.
It is a special day that I will never forget.
Living in the Moment
One thing I have noticed about these magical days is that often you DON’T REALIZE the impact and how special that day is until it is gone. That is why, regardless of how busy we are, we must always live in the moment and just be grateful for what we have everyday.
We must strive for the future, but also be grateful for what we have at this moment.
Right now, today may be just another day. But it is not. It is special.
I’ve written this post, and now you are reading it. But take a second and be grateful. I realize one day I may not be able to share my thoughts with you anymore during the tranquility of an early Tuesday morning with Obi on my lap.
And whenever that day comes, we will remember today.
What are some of the special moments in your life and what makes them magical?
Sincerely,
Simon Chan

Thanks for sharing Marley and Me with me. I have a hunch that you will someday write your Obi and Me, which I believe will surpass Marley and Me in every conceivable way.

I too like dogs and cats. We use to have them when we were kids……then for a while in our present house. it was quite a big black dog n we couldn’t look after it well ‘cos we were all working and had no time for it. So we gave it away to the SPCA. Even now I like to have the small daschund….my brother’s house has one…by the name of Brownie and he also has a spitz by the name of Pixie. but I like the Brownie …..’cos it is small and it has short hair…..and the hair wn’t drop so much. But my sis is against it….because it might bring all kinds of diseases from the neighbourhood. So we put it off.
I use to ponder…i could have stayed alone and rented out rooms etc…..but it is not worth it. only 2 or 3 married friends will drop by and I could have a dog and a cat……but it is better to get along with my sisters and contacts and be of use to them then think of my small desires. Here it is a wider sphere and I too tog. with my sisters have contact with relatives in Kerala.
