6 Degrees of Separation Took me to Vancouver
I hope everyone is having a GREAT START to the New Year.
I just got back from a nice two-week break in Vancouver. Had a great time there, but it is GOOD to be home and to see the sun again in Southern California.
Vancouver is a nice city, but just like other places in the Pacific Northwest, the sun goes into hibernation during certain times of the year. I only got to see the sun twice in my 15 days there!
For the rare times that it was not raining, I would take Ethan out to Kensington Park and let him watch all these huge trucks and buses go by.
Ethan loves all types of cars but ESPECIALLY buses! He can literally just stand there for an hour just watching buses go by!
I loved every second of watching buses with Ethan as lifetime memories were being created.
Plenty of Time for Self Development
For an outdoor fitness fanatic who loves to bike, seeing the sun for only two days was kind of tough, but you adapt and get used to it.
I ended up running between three and five miles every day, sometimes in the rain, just enjoying the scenery. There is something about me that MUST workout and exercise.
That’s my drug, and I must get it everyday.
The other thing I love about running is that I listen to audios, and I did TONS of self-development everyday.
Including the time spent each day running, working out and walking my other son… oops, I meant my dog, Obi… I spent a minimum of at least 90 minutes per day listening to audiobooks and seminars.
Eating, Eating, Eating
I guess I had to workout like a fanatic in Vancouver because all I did there was eat DELICIOUS FOOD, tons of Chinese dim sum and sushi, almost everyday!
Vancouver may not have sun, but they have GREAT FOOD.
California is pretty good for Chinese and sushi, but Vancouver is on another level. The average sushi place in Vancouver is BETTER than an expensive place in Los Angeles. (Los Angeles isn’t shabby either.)
My network marketing business has allowed me to travel around the world and out of all the cities I’ve visited, I acknowledge that Vancouver has the BEST Chinese and the BEST sushi, bar none.
For Chinese food, it is better than Hong Kong.
For sushi, it is better than Tokyo and of course way cheaper.
So all I did was maximize the great food and made sure I had either dim sum or sushi every day, or some days we had both.
I’m a boring guy and not into variety. It was just Chinese and sushi everyday.
But hey, I got to enjoy GREAT FOOD!
Kelly’s Birthday
My son Ethan also got to play with his older cousins Kayla and Ella.
Actually Ella and Kayla had more fun playing with Obi, and poor Obi was SOOO tired at the end of the day from the non-stop stimulation from the two girls.
We were able to celebrate Kelly’s birthday in Vancouver as a family, which was nice.
Six Degrees of Separation
People often ask me how I met Kelly, since she is Canadian, and that is a long story. She was studying in UC Berkeley at the time, and I was living in LA.
Kelly was my friend’s friend’s roommate’s cousin’s friend’s friend.
You got that?
Six Degrees of Separation!
It was Lily’s friend Manson… whose roommate, Frank… whose cousin Ryan had a friend named Mike, and he was a Kelly’s friend.
Ironically, that is how life and networking works.
Whether in business or your personal life, think of the people that you spend a lot of time with today. Chances are they are not people you met while you were young, but people that you met through various degrees of separation.
This becomes even truer as you get older, and also the farther you live away from your hometown.
Business Networking
The lesson here is that you have to go network and meet people because you never know who will lead you to where.
This is especially true if you have a network marketing business.
I recently launched an extensive 20 CD/Video Network Marketing Training Product called THE S.O.W. SPONSORING SYSTEM. It teaches people how to communicate and sponsor, and reveals the Five Common Mistakes that almost every distributor makes.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is they assume that the people who will grow their organizations are going to be the people they know well.
Often the opposite is true. It’s not the people they know well, but it is acquaintances or people who are a few degrees of separation away.
I met the superstar leaders who helped grow my business the same way I met Kelly, i.e. via my personal network.
All of superstars were either acquaintances or people that I met through different degrees of separation.
None of them were people that I knew directly or well, but I had to contact everyone in order to grow my business.
Where You Will Be Five Years from Now
Now that the New Year just started, have you considered how things are different today than a year ago?
Where were you exactly one year ago?
Think hard and ask yourself have gotten you get better?
And the next step…
Ask yourself this question:
Where will you be 5 years from now?
Will you achieve your dreams and goals?
3 Factors that Determine Your Future
Fortunately, there are three factors that help us determine where we will be in the future.
Where you will be 5 years from now is determined by:
1) Your Self Development:
the books you read, the audios you listen to, and the seminars you attend. They all affect your thinking and philosophy toward life;
2) Your Travels:
I’ve written how traveling is a requirement for a meaningful life because there are so many educational experiences available in every trip, and
3) The People You Meet:
The people you meet will have a negative or positive impact on you.
If you are surrounded by negative people, it’s wise to start moving away from them ASAP and build new relationships.
Or, if you just want to meet more positive and successful people, go out there and network to meet others!
Go Out and Meet New People
If you are a novice at building new relationships with people you don’t know well, read my post about Communication, or you can check out THE S.O.W. SPONSORING SYSTEM, which addresses Magnetic Communication skills in detail.
Whatever you do, make it a goal to go out there and just build new contacts everyday.
You never know where it will lead. It can lead to new business or even a future spouse. 🙂
Comment below and let me know how you met the people that you are close to?
Sincerely,
Simon Chan
