Time Flies so Make The Best of It!
Can you believe it’s February already?!
A Visit from One of My Best Friends
One of the highlights of this past week was seeing one of my best friends, Simon Lam. He was in Los Angeles for a one-day business trip. That doesn’t sound that bad except that he was coming in from Hong Kong! He took a 13-hour flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, and then, after a day of business meetings, he flew back to Hong Kong in 24 hours.
Even though he flies Business class, that is BRUTAL!
It was a last minute trip for him so I didn’t find out he was coming until two days before his arrival, but I was super excited!
I’ve known Simon more than 20 years, and he was THE FIRST person I met at Columbia during freshman orientation.
We were at a meeting at the “Columbia steps” (outside Low library), and when we found out we shared the name “Simon” we were shocked!
Until then, I was the ONLY “Simon” that I had known. (I’m sure you know ten Johns and Daves, but do you personally know even three Simons?!)
The funny thing is…
Simon had never heard someone with my type of voice and accent, and he initially thought I was British!
Hilarious…
At the time I was awkward, shy and just spoke strangely.
That is one of the reasons I am very grateful to the network marketing profession.
It forced me to break out of my shell and discover my hidden potential.
Simon can share tons of moments with you, and he would be the first person to tell you that he never in 100 years would have expected that I would be speaking on stage and teaching effective communication strategies.
Simon reminds me of how far I have come… and also, how much further I can go.
But let’s move on… before I further embarrass myself and talk about my socially awkward past. If you meet Simon one day and you are nice to him, he’ll share a few more embarrassing “Simon Chan moments” with you.
Charting Progress Toward Our Goals
How many of you have given up on your 2013 goals already because you’ve either lost focus or they were “too hard?”
Or maybe you haven’t given up yet, but you are not hitting your targets?
Don’t feel badly because anyone can miss targets, including me.
When we fall behind, it is our natural inclination to go back into our comfort zones and stray from our goals.
But there is hope.
I am going to share with you three tips that will help.
3 Tips to Force Ourselves Out of the Comfort Zone
I’ve learned over the years to “cheat the system” and use these little “tricks” to help reach my goals.
Here are three tips:
1) Write It Down
Make sure you write down your goal in a place that you can see every day. Seeing it every day will not just remind you but embed the goal into your subconscious mind.
2) Establish Public Accountability
If you announce your goal publicly, it may be scary, but you will achieve it! For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds and you announce it to the world, it will help.
But how about after you announce it to the world? What if you get on the scale, take a video of it, and post it on youtube to share it with all your friends?
I’m sure THAT will motivate you and get you to lose your 20 pounds quickly!
Painful? Yes. And it may be uncomfortable for you, but the public accountability will help you achieve your goal.
I use this technique all the time, and it helped me launch my THE S.O.W. SPONSORING SYSTEM. last month. If you don’t know, it is a 22 CD/video series that teaches people how to be successful in sponsoring in network marketing.
It required a TON of work, and I encountered many challenges. The ONLY reason I got it out on time in January was because I had publicly let all my Advanced Diamond Mastermind and 5 Star Mastermind members know about it. The pressure was on, and it helped me get it done.
Are you applying any accountability?
3) Have Something at Stake
The last tip is to have something at stake.
Our brains are wired for “fight or flight,” and they always work hard to prevent the loss of something.
So for me, I had to get my THE S.O.W. SPONSORING SYSTEM. out because I would have lost money (I would have had to refund people since many motivated distributors paid me before the product was even finished!), and more importantly, I would have lost reputation.
Not only would I have been known as someone that could not “get it done” and “all talk and no action,” but I would have been a hypocrite because I teach people how to achieve their goals and yet I failed to accomplish what I needed to get done.
So the public accountability helps!
My Next Public Goal
This past weekend was spent working toward my latest project, which has been a goal of mine for years.
I am getting closer to publishing my first book!
I had written down this goal as early as 2006 after many people had told me that I had “one or two books in me.”
I wrote down the goal to publish my first book, and seven years later, it is about to come to fruition.
The amazing thing is that it is going to happen a lot quicker than I had expected. When I wrote the goal down in 2006, I expected to fulfill it in 20 years… not seven years!
It goes to show the power of writing down your dreams and goals.
If you write it down and look at it every day, it will push and motivate you toward action. s
Yes, I still had challenges and delays. I could have had the book done already last year, but I got sidetracked.
This past weekend I was at a three-day writing workshop in Los Angeles, and got to finish 95% of my book.
The book is due out in the second quarter of 2013 with a target date of May 1st.
So there!
That is my public statement, and you guys will hold me accountable.
Now that this blog is published, I need to get my butt working and put in the finishing touches!
Appearing on Radio Show
I had the opportunity to appear on a radio show this weekend to promote my book as well.
The show is called The Big Biz Show, and the host interviewed selected authors on their topic and their book. The show goes out to over 2 million listeners, and it was a very cool experience.
Now It’s Your Turn to Work On Your Goals
If you are interested in starting a blog or even writing a book in the future, you can contact me, and I can give you some tips to get you going.
As for what my book is about, it will be a “How-To” Network Marketing book that teaches people to sponsor and also avoid the mistakes that I painfully made in more than a decade in the MLM profession.
So, there you go. That’s my public accountability.
I’ve got to get going and work on my next goal!
It’s February, but it’s not too late. Go back to your goals for 2013. Start applying the three tips so that you can achieve what you set out to do!
Sincerely,
Simon Chan
