My Passion to Read
I read somewhere that 5% of 2014 is already done. I don’t know if that sounds like a lot to you, but to me, 2014 is definitely flying!
This week went by extremely quickly, especially after I lost one full day of productivity due to some VERY BAD food poisoning. (I ate bad sushi.)
I’ve been busy this past week finalizing my 2nd Annual Australia NO BS NO HYPE MLM Training Tour from March 17 – 31.
My Australia trip last year was one of the highlights of 2013, and after numerous requests to return, I finally was able to nail down the dates for my return trip in 2014.
It was one of the best trips I’ve had in my life because, not only is Australia a beautiful country with amazing people, but dozens of MLM distributors were able to rank advance and increase their incomes within 90 days of my visit.
Their success makes it rewarding and gives me extra incentive to go back this year.

Sunny Skies
I’ve been back in LA for almost two weeks now, and it’s definitely so nice to see the sun every day.
I realized when I went to Vancouver that I’ve been so spoiled by the great LA weather; every day is sunny and in the 70s. I complain about two weeks of rain and clouds while many people live like that throughout the year.
I also learned that it would be difficult for me to live anywhere else. I’m too much of an outdoors person. I love my running, biking, walks with Obi, and the freedom to take my kids to the park any day of the week.
Unlike others, I rarely have to consider the weather factor. Rain and clouds are just too depressing for me now.
I could never live in the Pacific Northwest, like Seattle or Vancouver. It rains so much during the winter. I know the summers are nice there, but the rain makes it too gloomy and prevents me from doing the things I love.
So, yes, I’ll stick to paying the higher real estate and taxes so that I can enjoy doing the things I like to do.
My Passion to Read and Learn
Speaking of things that I like to do, another passion of mine is reading, and last week I started a consistent time to read to my three-month old son, Didi, every day. (Kelly and Didi came back from Vancouver last week, and it’s good to have them back.)
If you have kids, please understand that reading to your kids is one of the most important gifts you can give them.
The habit of reading and creating that desire and curiosity to learn is one of the habits that will determine how successful your child is later in life.
I highly recommend all parents to read this book: “Read Aloud Handbook” by Jim Trelease.
My oldest son, Ethan, loves to read, and we have our routine of reading every night before he sleeps.
We also read during the day, and he loves reading so much that one of the punishments that he gets is “Daddy won’t read the Freight Train book” for him.
That punishment has as much of an impact as taking his toys away!
I guess that would be punishment for me, too. If you didn’t allow me to read something tomorrow, I’d go crazy!
Three Simple Tips to Get Kids to Love Reading
For parents out there, I’ll share three simple tips that will help get your kids to develop the habit of reading.
1) Have books everywhere in the house.
Make it easy for your kids to pick something up to read. Hide the TV, but put books everywhere around the house.
Yes, even by the toilet. 🙂
2) Have a Reading Routine
Whether it is reading first thing when they wake up, or before they go to bed, have a reading routine.
Make sure your kids know that you will read to them at a scheduled time.
Kids generally love to hear stories, and look forward to parents spending time reading to them.
Can Someone Not Read and Still Be Successful in Life?
I heard recently a top MLM income earner brag that he doesn’t like to read and never really needed to read in order to become successful in network marketing.
I don’t want to discredit his accomplishments in MLM, but I can tell you the exact size of his bank account from making such a silly and bold statement.
He may be earning good money in his network marketing business, but his bank account is most likely VERY small.
I say that because I actually know his current personal and financial situation.
Yes, he is earning a ton in MLM, but he’s probably also blowing it all from his lack of financial wisdom and poor life skills.
He may be earning a million dollars a year, but at the same time spending a million a year. Does that make him successful?
It’s not the MLM profession’s fault.
It’s his lack of wisdom and life skills.
Please don’t get me wrong. This guy is super talented in MLM, and is a MLM Success Story.
However, there is more to life than just his MLM profession.
In MLM, he is a superstar, but in personal finance and in life skills, he is a rookie due to his poor attitude about reading.
I’m not the oldest guy in town, but I’ve still yet to meet a cash millionaire–someone who has a million dollars in their bank account–who is not well read.
How to Develop the Love of Reading
If you want to develop a passion for reading, you can apply the formula I shared in How to Create Passion to Stay Focused.
Simply Study It + Do It Daily = Passion!
The more you do it, the better you will get, and the more you will like it.
I’ll share a quick story on how I became a better reader.
How to Improve Reading Comprehension
Back when I was in high school, I had to take the dreaded Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.), which is a very important test that plays a huge role in determining what type of college you are admitted.
Ace it, and you can get into a top 25 school.
Screw it up, and even if you have great grades, you can throw away any chance you have for getting into your dream school.
The S.A.T. had two parts at the time. One was Math, and the other was Verbal, which consisted of reading boring passages and answering reading comprehension questions.
When I took the test the first time, I aced the math, but was ATROCIOUS with the reading comprehension, especially since English was not my first language.
I read too slow and never understood those boring passages.
Somehow, when I took the test again six months later, I was able to improve over 200 points and scored high enough to be admitted into an Ivy League University, Columbia in NYC.
So how did I do it?
There are two things I did.
I Signed Up with a Coach
My parents were wise enough to understand that I couldn’t do it alone.
If you want to be successful in anything, you must get a coach.
This is the same reason that my Insider’s Circle members or Mastermind members do better than other MLM distributors. Yes, I know it costs money, but you cannot afford NOT to have a coach.
My parents invested in getting me an S.A.T. coach, and we had weekly sessions for 12 straight weeks.
Coach Taught Me This Reading Comprehension Technique
The S.A.T. coach helped me improve my scores in both the Math and Verbal sections, but the one tip that he shared with me that helped me the most was how to improve my reading comprehension.
It was so easy to do and apply!
I immediately improved within one month.
It had nothing to do with learning a new trick or studying the dictionary, etc.
It was so simple.
All he had me do was read the two pages in the Op-Ed, Opinion Editorial, section in the New York Times every day.
That was my homework.
Back when I was a teenager, I would read the newspapers and had decent comprehension when it came to talking about sports or local news.
However, when it came to reading Opinions and Editorials about national fiscal policy, international politics, human rights, or whatever boring stuff they were talking about, I was AWFUL.
Just ask yourself, how many 16 year olds LIKE to read that stuff??!!!
I hated it, and I could barely read two paragraphs before my mind would drift.
Regardless, my coach made me do it EVERY DAY.
He said that if I would read it every day, I would soon understand all that “crap.”
The more I read that boring “crap,” the easier it would be able to understand and ace those reading articles in the S.A.T. test.
Coach said it was like practicing for baseball. If you can hit a ball thrown at 100 MPH, you can easily hit the ones that are 70 MPH.
Those boring Op-Ed articles were the 100 MPH pitches.
Once he used that analogy, I got motivated and read the Op-Ed daily.
Just one month later, I realized my coach was right when I saw the improvement in my first practice test with him.
I improved more in just 30 days than when I was studying by myself for months!
When I retook the exam five more months later, I aced the Verbal section, and the rest is history.
Reading Increases Awareness
My final point about reading is that it has increased my awareness of my own beliefs, as well as my understanding of the weaknesses that held me back over the years.
It exposed me to new ideas, strategies, and philosophies that helped me overcome my obstacles. It can do the same for you.
I’ll be sharing a lot of the roadblocks that I learned to overcome in my special training called “Inside the Mind of a Top MLM Income Earner” in my 2nd Annual Australia NO BS NO HYPE Training tour from March 17 – 31. For Early Bird Registration, go to www.simonwchan.com/australia
What is a recent book that you have read that has exposed some of the weaknesses that you must improve?
If you’re not aware of any weaknesses and not working on any, then it’s time for you to start reading!
