Maintaining the Hunger for Success
I don’t watch basketball much anymore, but I still follow what’s going on. The extent of what I know comes from the five to ten minutes that I spend every night watching highlights on espn.com as I do my abs workout. This past week the University of Louisville beat the University of Michigan in the Championship game of the NCAA.
Louisville won the close game, but what intrigued me during the entire NCAA Final Four tournament was how two of Michigan’s star players were the sons of former NBA superstar players.
Both Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III are star players who will eventually end up in the NBA just like their fathers.
The chance of getting into the NBA is extremely small, and it’s even rarer to see sons of former players follow their father’s footsteps. The main reason they can’t duplicate the success is not because of the lack of pedigree but because of the lack of desire.
Wealth Does Not Last Past Three Generations
There is a Chinese saying: 富不過三代. It means that no matter how wealthy a family is, the wealth never lasts more than three generations.
If you were born poor and worked hard to become wealthy, all your wealth will be gone and your grandkids will struggle just like you struggled.
In other words… rags to riches is only half of the story. The second half is your frightening family legacy, which goes in the opposite direction. It’s rags to riches and back to rags.
Your kids, the second generation, will lack the desire and hunger to become successful. By the time the grandkids come around, they have totally lost the work ethic and focus and all the wealth has been squandered.
Respect and Admiration
Both Hardaway Jr. and Robinson III said that their fathers never pushed them to have basketball careers. It was something that they loved and wanted to do. That IMPRESSES ME.
They were born into wealthy families and could have taken it easy, but somehow they found their passion and had the hunger and desire to pursue it.
I also admire their parents for the way they raised their sons. Raising kids, instilling good values, and giving them the hunger to succeed on their own is hard enough. I can only imagine that it is 100 times harder when the kids are sons of multi millionaire NBA players and can buy whatever they want.
My Challenges as a Father
I find myself attracted to these father/ son situations now because everyday I face a daunting challenge for my son Ethan.
I don’t want my success in network marketing to create an environment where he gets “lazy.”
I am looking for the proper balance.
I want Ethan to have the best of everything, but at the same time, I don’t want to give him too much so that he doesn’t need to work for anything and becomes spoiled.
I want him to have the same hunger and desire for success that I do.
Passing My Legacy to Ethan
So now that I have the baton, it’s my turn to create the best environment for Ethan.
It’s no longer about me; it’s about my kids and my legacy.
It’s about becoming the best parent I can, guiding Ethan to have the same success habits that help me every day.
Will he have the same hunger and desire that I do? Can he be even better than me?
Hunger and desire don’t have to do with money or materialistic wealth.
I just want him to pursue whatever his passion is as hard as I pursue mine. Because in the end, it’s your pursuit and fulfillment of your purpose in life that makes you happy.
And that’s what I want to do as a Daddy.
That is my MOST important challenge every day.
Sincerely,
Simon Chan

Very interesting question you have posed to me. First of all I must tell you a little bit of indian history. During the moghul empire The Tipu Sultan had 9 duplicates(or look alike) to escape capture of the Bristish soldiers. Then one of his own camp people betrayed him and he was caught in his own hiding place.
The point i am trying to tell is the music I hear is from india based…….and there are 7 0r 8 stations or dupicates. The thing is it is not helpful at all….in fact if i listen to it ……and follow…i will lose money. Maybe the music is helpful in other camps…….i cannot talk or complain or be harsh…….i escape by praying to deities like Ammachi, Mary mother of God or Amman or Durga Goddess. The explanation behind is very long……but i tend to also lose friends…..they get picked up by some other people.
For Ethan you must be able to detect what are his interests and guide him along it. But sometimes they themselves are not sure what they are interested in. I have come across people who study to be a doctor and they are not interested in that profession. Or they study to be nurses….and they are not interested…….usually the parents don’t know what to do . i guess it is their own passions that they have to discover.
So with i end my little note.
