How I Came Across Nelson Mandela
A true hero passed away this past week, and he’s Nelson Mandela.
Since I was young, my favorite subject in school was always social studies. I first learned about Nelson Mandela and what he did in South Africa when I was around 12 years old.
I was amazed at the time that someone would sacrifice and spend over 27 years in jail to pursue his beliefs.
Ever since the first day I learned about his dedication to his lifetime dream, I started to follow him.
I see so many people say they want to change the world, but unfortunately, most don’t do what is necessary to really carry out their vision and passion.
Why I Choose to Do MLM
The reason I started a MLM business over ten years ago, as opposed to other business I considered, is because after I read “Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren, I felt that God’s calling for me was to have a positive impact on as many lives as possible.
I wanted to use my time and talents to help others maximize their potential and discover the amazing things that they can really do.
Network marketing allows me to do that because it is a coaching and mentoring business if you want a long-term, stable income.
That’s my version of making the world a better place.
It’s not a big, lofty goal like Mandela’s, but it’s my way to make a difference and focus on helping one individual at a time.
Inspired by Nelson Mandela
My journey has been filled with challenges, but leaders like Mandela provide inspiration along the way.
Here are eight things that I learned from Nelson Mandela that helped fuel my passion to help others.
1) Accept It Won’t Be Easy
If you want to do something worthwhile and have a big goal, you must accept that it won’t be easy.
If you want easy, then just be like the rest of the herd.
However, if you want to live a life that is meaningful and have a legacy, it’s going to be the toughest thing you do. You have to accept that EVERY DAY maybe the toughest day in your life, filled with new challenges and headaches.
2) Fight the Haters and Negative People
Your journey will be lined with haters who will tell you that you can’t do it.
Nelson Mandela’s persistence was inspiring, and it taught me that if someone could do it, then we can all do it.
In the last three minutes of my acceptance speech for the President’s Award (i.e., the award for being the #1 Fastest Growing Distributor in North America in my MLM Company), I talked about how to use the haters and negative feelings in your life as fuel to motivate yourself.

Instead of letting others take you down, use their attitudes and criticism as motivation to prove them wrong!
3) Accept the Reality That You Will Not Be Liked
If you want to accomplish big things, you have to accept that there will be groups of people that won’t like you.
If you have people that criticize you or don’t like you, that is a good thing.
It means you are on the path to success.
If you look up anyone who has had any success in their lives, you will find tons of critics. For example, look at Mandela, Obama, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Donald Trump, Lebron James, Tom Cruise, etc, they all have critics.
However, if you Google the “bum down the street” who hasn’t done anything in his life, there is no one that says one negative thing about him.
So if you have critics in your life and people who don’t like you, that’s good news. You’re on the right track!
4) Dedicate Your Whole Life
Your mission is going to be a lifetime goal and not something short-term.
Many people say they want to change the world, but they only do it for a short-term.
They quit after they encounter the first signs of challenge.
Without the long-term commitment, it just won’t happen.
It’s inspiring to see how Mandela’s entire life was dedicated to the liberation of his people and country.
5) Don’t Let Fear Stop You
Sometimes we hear the saying “No Fear,” and I believe an athletic apparel company took that phrase as their name.
The reality though is that we are humans, and we do have fears.
Being scared is part of being human.
I’m sure Mandela experienced tremendous fear throughout his life, but he kept going!
That is what we all must do.
When we are scared, we know that we are going outside our comfort zone.
Our comfort zone is the most dangerous place, and when we venture out, that is the ONLY time we are growing and getting better!
6) We Are Born with Unlimited Potential and Can Accomplish Anything
Each of us has so much potential.
We can go beyond what is considered impossible and exhibit incredible tolerance and persistence.
We can learn new skills and bring down barriers, and for people like Mandela or Ghandi, they can bring down entire regimes and governments.
We don’t need to be like a Mandela, but if we just have 1/10 of his focus and dedication, we will accomplish our goals because we are born with that potential inside of us already.
7) Must Pay the Price
Finally, if you really want to change the world and use your life to impact others, you must pay the price.
Every day you will have to make sacrifices.
You can’t do the things that others do.
You have to be different and go the extra mile.
We don’t need to go to jail like Mandela, but we do need to give up the things we want to do in the short-term in order to make our long-term goals a reality.
8) Never Give Up
Finally, no matter how bad it is, never, never, never give up.
It’s amazing what persistence can do.
Even if it means more than 27 years locked in jail, you never give up.
In the end, Mandela won, and he took down apartheid.
Quitting never wins, but persistence always wins.
What Is Your Passion and Purpose in Life
Mandela was a true hero, and his legacy will last forever.
He has already made the world better, and will continue to inspire new leaders who promote positive change.
What is your purpose in life?
What is your higher calling?
How do you plan to make the world a better place?
Whatever your passion and mission in life is, remember these eight lessons, and remember to never, never, never give up.
Sincerely,
Simon Chan

Thank you for this blog Simon. Born in South Africa and having lived there for 16 years, Madiba has a special place my heart. I am reminded of my dads stories of living through apartheid, my uncles being involved in the struggle, the moment Mandela walked out of prison in Feb 1990, my dad being over 40 when he voted in Feb 1994 in South Africa’s first democratic election, and our first black President (a moment my dad thought he would not live to see). It is with sadness that we remember the struggle, it is with fondness that we remember Madiba’s triumphs and with his passing we are reminded of what is possible when we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Your blog here hits the mark on what Madiba not only preached but what he consistently demonstrated. “It always seems impossible until it is done” –Nelson Mandela.
