Finding a Solution to Solving a Crisis
Two weeks ago I wanted to cry.
It was the worst day of the year…
Actually, it was one of my worst days in a long time.
It was one of those days when everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.
You may have heard the phrase, “When it rains, it pours,” and two Tuesdays ago, it was a hurricane.
During a 12-hour span, I had three bad things happen.
Normally if one of these things happened, it would be pretty bad. However, when all three happened at same time… wow… I can’t even describe the feeling.
I just wanted to cry…
First, my website went down and was inaccessible for 96 hours.
Second, three of my external hard drives stopped working!
I back up all my data, but it was so bad that my backups were not working!
Third, I could not send or receive emails!
(If you sent me an email and it got bounced back, I’m sorry. Also, if I did not reply to your message last week, please resend it.)
Website Goes Down!
The first disaster was when my website went down for four days…
You may think 96 hours is not that long, but it is an ETERNITY when you have one of the top MLM Training websites and have thousands of viewers each month.
My assistant, Kayla, and I were FLOODED with emails about our site being down.
People could not access my trainings and, worse, the disabled server also affected my free iPhone and Droid App, which thousands use.
It was a customer service nightmare.
The only consolation I had when it happened was that I’m BIG TIME now. Now I know how Twitter, Facebook, or Apple’s iCloud must feel when their servers go down. You are burdened with emails only if people care about your site.
What Happened to the Website
The positive aspect of this is that I learned valuable lessons to use in negative situations.
Turns out that when you have a hosting service, such as Hostgator, Godaddy, etc., you do NOT get your own server. You share a server with other anonymous websites.
So in other words, if other sites are overusing the server, it can slow my site down.
What happened was the opposite.
Due to heavy usage from users that access my training content and a faulty WordPress plugin, my website was overusing the server and slowing all the other sites down.
The owners of the other sites on my server complained to Hostgator, my hosting service provider, and Hostgator shut my site down until we fixed the problem.
That was my lesson in domain servers and hosting!
I’m not going to bore you with the details, but after four days of little sleep, my business partner, Scott McGee, got the situation fixed and we are now on our OWN, dedicated server. 🙂
As you can tell, my website looks a little different than before, but it is much faster and easier to use!
What to Do During a Crisis
One of the things I’ve learned over the years of bad experiences is to NEVER overreact and be in panic mode.
Panic mode or reaction normally leads to emotional decisions, which are often the wrong decisions to make.
Instead, you need a clear head so you can think rationally, not emotionally.
One of the things that has helped me over the years is to implement a Three Step Process every time I encounter a tough or difficult time.
Three Steps to Solving a Crisis
Here are the three steps:
Step One: Write down and be clear about what you want
In this situation, I wanted three things to be back up and working. I wanted to:
1) Have my website accessible to my users,
2) Restore my hard drives so that I could access the data, and
3) Make sure I could send emails and receive all emails that were sent to me.
It’s important to be clear about what you want.
Without a good goal, you can easily find yourself distracted and doing other things, or sometimes even pursuing solutions that may not give you the end result you want.
Step Two: Gratitude
Based on years of using this technique, the most important steps are number two, “Gratitude,” and three, “Letting It Go”
Gratitude allows you to enjoy what you have and makes you think positively.
In other words, it allows you to live in the moment or “live in the Now.”
Gratitude makes you appreciate all the blessings you already have. It makes you forget your problems.
It also makes you realize the problems are NOT as bad as they appear.
In fact, your problems are NEVER as bad as you think they are.
That is why it’s important to think with a clear head and not act emotionally.
When I am grateful, I think of my beautiful family, and how lucky I am that they are all healthy.
When I think about them, websites, hard drives, and emails are no longer important.
It de-stresses me and clears my head.
And when you have a clear head, the solutions become so much more obvious!
Once I cleared my mental cache of negativity and worry, I easily fixed my hard drives. (I realized I had to do some Google research to learn how to do a complete reboot.)
Thinking rationally instead of emotionally also allowed me to see the solution to my email problem. (I had to clear the memory and edit a Gmail filter that was confusing some of the emails from my 12 different email addresses.)
Without a clear head and getting rid of the negativity and emotions, I could not have found the solutions I needed.
And it all started with being Grateful.
Step Three: Learning to Let It Go
Another important part is to learn to “Let It Go.”
When you let things go mentally, it makes you realize that you have done the best you could and you just have to be patient. There is no need to over think and stress yourself.
Again, over-thinking and “stress” closes your mind and doesn’t give you the clear mind that is necessary to see the solutions.
A good question to ask yourself is, “What is the worst that can happen?”
For me, the reality was that there were 100s of worse things that could have happen. When I thought about it this way, I realized that the problem I was facing was really trivial in the overall scheme of things in life.
It wasn’t the end of the world…
Once my business partner, Scott McGee, and I “let it go,” the solution to the website issue became obvious. It had already been three days and the hosting service could not find the problem, but Scott and I found a better solution.
We just threw away the old site and built a better, new site from scratch. Scott and his tech team were able to do it in less than 24 hours!
That was much easier than trying to fix the old site.
So in less than 24 hours, thanks to Scott and his tech team, I was able to get a brand new website!
I’m so grateful to have such a great business partner in Scott McGee. He runs all the backend for our businesses and manages all the IT and tech people.
I’m thankful to have such an amazing team! 🙂
Who else can get a completely new site up and running within 24 hours?!
So when you look carefully at my current site, you may note it is slightly different from the old one. Maybe didn’t even notice?! It may look similar on the outside, but the engine and architecture inside ars entirely differently. The site is significantly improved.
Also, we have our own, dedicated server now. So when millions of users come to access my network marketing trainings, it will no longer slow anyone else down. 🙂
Problems Are a Blessing
After every storm, the sky clears, and we always get a beautiful day. The weather is better than before the storm came.
It’s the same with our problems.
After they pass, we are wiser and better than we were before our problems hit us.
We find solutions to things that we may have never considered.
We improve and get better because of our problems.
The next time you get hit with a challenging situation, remember to step away and let the negative emotions die down. Clear your head by being grateful and just letting things go.
Once you’ve done it the first time and you see the results, you’ll be going back to it again and again.
Let me know how it helps you.
God Bless,

it was very good reading about the Gratitude and the “letting go” part of one’s life. I guess I have to seriously be in the ‘now’…….tho’ I have a funny feeling as if I am caught in different time warp……..or following somebody else’s footsteps. I get so irritated just thinking about it. Sometimes I even feel I am playing the role of tomboy, or a grandmother or some walla. I have to forget all this….somehow…..and just get by with life. It is just that my mind gets so crowded with thoughts. Anyway life is not that bad……..it is just that I am not so young as I was once……or not as strong as I once was. I am mostly confined to the house and have to redo my time management all over again.
