What Tunes Do YOU Listen to?

Music That Gets Me Going

studying musicAre you listening to any music as you are reading this?

I’m listening to my Studying Music playlist that I created on Spotify as I write this. If you want to check it out, here is the link.

If you don’t know what Spotify is, it is one of my FAVORITE APPS that I cannot live without. But more on that later…

Someone recently asked me if I incorporate music into my productivity regimen, and I definitely do.

When I need to concentrate to create any type of content, whether it is writing this blog, working on my book, or preparing trainings and presentations, I listen to this Studying Music playlist that I created.

It’s just slow, relaxing music that is almost the stuff you listen to during meditation, but it’s not. I can’t describe it. You have to check it out to see what I mean.

I have discovered that my mind easily loses focus if there is “too much going on” in the music. I can’t have lyrics, and even some classical music with a fast tempo can distract me when I am producing content.

What gets me creative is slow, New Age type of music.

Check out the playlist, and you will know what I mean.

Admin Tasks Calls for Trance

When it comes to doing more administrative tasks, then it’s a totally different story.

workoutThat’s when I have to change things up. I listen to upbeat trance music.

I don’t even remember how I got introduced to trance, but I love it now, especially when it comes to doing admin work and working out.

I constantly go back to Armin Van Buuren’s weekly State of Trance podcast. I also have a Workout Trance playlist that I listen to when I lift weights.

My workouts don’t start with trance though…

When I jog to the gym, I listen to self-development because it motivates me, and it is my learning time. But once I get to the gym, then it is trance time.

The jog back is normally trance as well.

I always feel so good after a workout, and have great ideas, which makes it tough for my mind to focus on self-development. Instead, the trance tunes and the workout somehow gets my subconscious going crazy, and I get my best ideas and action plans during this time.

I’ll write more about my workouts and how to stay in shape later because many of you have asked me about what I do on a daily basis.

But back to music…

It’s Time for Classical

In between the high concentration tasks and lighter administrative work, I listen to classical music.

If you want to know what tasks I am referring to, they are things like checking emails and engaging with my fans on social media, etc.
super leaning
And what types of classical music?

I can’t listen to things that are too fast or “happening” such as Stravinsky, etc. It has to be slower like Baroque. I got started on Baroque a few years ago after I read this fantastic book called Super Learning by Sheila and Lynn Schroeder. Super Learning suggested that consistent listening to Baroque music enhances learning.

And I definitely cannot listen to songs with lyrics because I find it very distracting and unproductive when I work.

Diary Music

Every evening I wind down my day by writing my diary and “Letter to Ethan.” Normally I would listen to either 80s or 90s music or alternative.

This type of music makes me nostalgic and grateful for the day. It helps me to write better. Sometimes I switch and listen to New Age and meditation music, which helps me unwind and get ready for bed.

In between everything else, I listen to other types of music such as Contemporary Christian, Hard Bop Jazz, Alternative, Meditation, R&B and Hip Hop. But it’s much more rare for me to take the time to listen since I never get around to it.

Baby Music

One last music genre that I’ve discovered recently is baby music!

When I’m driving by myself, I’m always listening to self-development, but when Ethan is in the car, then it’s baby music. It’s often Baby Einstein music, but recently, it’s been all Chinese Sesame Street. 🙂

So that’s a summary of the music I’m listening to and when.

Spotify: One of My Top Ten Apps

spotifyI have everything on Spotify playlists, and I really, really LOVE Spotify.

It’s one of the top ten apps I could NOT LIVE without.

I’ve been a subscriber to their premium package since the day it launched in the USA in 2011. It is totally worth it!

Just the fact that I can download all the baby songs and create playlists, have them ALL synced on all my devices (laptop, ipad, iphone), and have them play them anywhere I want makes it worth it. It even accesses and syncs the audio tracks saved on your computer, which for me is my audio books!

It also makes things like finding baby music so easy. 🙂

If you don’t use Spotify, go get it.

I’m all about productivity and convenience, and the time it has saved me from just putting the baby music together for Ethan has been worth thousands of dollars to me.

If you are in a country that has Spotify, definitely go check it out.

So what type of music do you listen to?

Sincerely,

Simon Chan
