Today’s Coaching Question comes from Advanced Diamond Mastermind Coaching member, Hermoione from Australia.
Marketing goal, I am a bit confused by this. Direct mail is not applicable as my downlines are international students they do not have a fixed place to live. Business card will definitely help and I am going to do it in February. Facebook can only help with my English team, I will still use it and post more frequently on fun page (a bit lazy working on it in last month). Chinese use different social media, this is what I am confused most. Since I am going to focus on costumers in China, do you think I’d better post product information on the internet? then this will not be consistent with what I am doing now. For website, I haven’t know any leader in Melbourne area have a website and also no Chinese leaders have a website now. I’d really love to have one but really don’t know whether I should have a Chinese one or English one and what kind of content should I put in. Do you have any suggestions? If i can figure it out, next July will be the best time to lodge my website.

I think you got great goals and I want to give you some suggestions and ideas.
I think you have a great marketing opportunities that allow you to stand out. Not only will this help with prospecting but also it will make your team proud.
The key to remember is that you don’t have to get everything up and running all at once. It can be a work in progress (like a huge skyscraper that opens up before it is 100% built).
Marketing Ideas for Network Marketing
Here are some comments on the ideas that you brought up.
You definitely need one! The sooner the better. The business card represents you and your business so make sure you are proud of it!
You brought up posting for English team and also how Chinese use different social media and how you are confused about it.
The lesson to remember is always fish where the fish are.
So if I want to catch fresh water eel, I don’t go to the Pacific Ocean that has salt water. If I want to catch tuna, I don’t go to fresh water lakes. You fish where the fish live.
So if you want to target the Chinese market, then you have to be present in that social media. If you want the English speakers, then interact in Facebook, etc.
It does REQUIRE more work but remember, nothing is easy. If you want huge rewards of BOTH markets, then you have to do both.
There is no shortcut.
Now the good news is that if the target audience and the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is the same, then you can have the SAME marketing message but just translated.
But if the USP is different, then you would have to entirely create 2 different marketing messages and that could require a lot of work and something to reconsider if it is worth it at your stage right now. Do you have the time to do that?
China Market and Customers
It is entirely ok to have 2 separate marketing messages if they are targeted to 2 separate markets. So you can have a business focus for your current team and business prospects and then have an entirely different message to target customers in the China market. There are a lot of exciting opportunities there.
However, it will be a lot of work and it would require 2 different websites and identities. For example, I use 2 different business cards. One for business prospects and another for product prospects. I also have 2 different websites. One product site that talks very little about MLM and the other site that talks only about MLM and NOTHING about products. You would want to keep them separate.
For more advanced leaders, if your network marketing business is under a corporate name, then you can have 2 separate companies that have 2 different messages. For i.e. when I use my product card, I use the “USANA Health Sciences” business card but when I prospect for business I normally use my company identity “Build to Retire Inc.” or “Simon Chan Inc.”
You can also do vice versa.
One of the Gold Directors that I have helped, markets to doctors and helps the doctors sell the nutritional products by recommending it to their patients. However, the doctor knows NOTHING about the network marketing component of the products. To this day, they just know they recommend high quality nutritional supplements that are provided by A.B.C. Company (name of the leader’s company). A.B.C. company serves as a middleman or consultant and does the paperwork and logistics and supplies the doctors with the network marketing products.
That is an extreme and effective example but you have to be careful of how it is exactly done because it may run against the company’s Policys and Procedures.
So to answer your question, yes… you can have 2 separate messages for 2 separate markets… but make sure they are separate!
Creating a website and providing content may be overwhelming. The easiest way to start would be to create a personal site or team site where you put team trainings up. Your team can login to access the recordings.
This serves 3 purposes:
1) Makes it easy for downlines to access
2) Creates time for you – if a new associate asks you something that you have trained or talked about before, you can simply refer them to a previous recording
3) Good Prospecting Tool – prospects are always impressed when you show them a nice looking team site!
I think you have tremendous potential especially since you say that no English or Chinese leader from Melbourne has a website. The fact that you simply have one would make you stand out! And it would make your team proud!
As for Chinese or English, maybe you can have 1 site and just have the content translated?
When the time comes for you to work on this side project, make sure you outsource this work and don’t waste too much time that should be spent on prospecting, training and relationship building.
I think your goals are realistic but you have to ask yourself some questions like:
Do you have time to target 2 different markets?
I think you have HUGE potential due to your China background. I only wish I could speak and write Chinese as well as you did. If I was in your shoes, I would shoot for the stars and go for both markets!
