We’re Changing Every Day, But It’s Invisible
During my recent trips to Vancouver, Australia and Long Beach, I was shocked at how many people said that I had lost weight. It was one of the first things they said to me.
Initially when I heard it, I thought it was said as a compliment, meaning that I’m in better shape and a lower percentage of body fat.
However, the more people said it, I could tell they were saying it out of concern instead of praise.
I asked myself, “Did I really get that much skinnier?!”
If a few people said it, it could have been a random comment, but if everyone said it, then I should maybe look more into it.
I stepped onto a scale for the first time in months at the gym, and I was shocked!
They were right. I had lost close to eight pounds of muscle (three kg) in less than two months!
It was the lightest I’ve been since my high school days.
Then I realized what had happened.
Due to the lack of sleep after the birth of my second son, I hurt my neck muscle while lifting weights. It was so bad that, for the first few days, I had trouble driving since I couldn’t really turn my neck. I had to stop lifting weights.
I kept on exercising and doing cardio, but I stopped weight training. I also started to eat less, and whenI do that consistently, it seems I lose muscle mass pretty quickly.
We Don’t Notice How We Change
It’s amazing that we never notice the daily changes that we undergo.
I didn’t lose eight pounds of muscle in one day. It was an accumulation of two months of not lifting weights and eating less.
We often don’t realize how we change until we measure ourselves or get feedback from others.
From a day to day perspective, the change is invisible to us.
We can’t see what is really happening to us.
Change is the only way we can get better, but we often quit too early because we can’t see these invisible changes.
Status Quo Means You Are Getting Worse
All Change is incremental. It happens daily, but we just don’t see it.
That’s why the status quo is never the same.
If you’re at the status quo, you are getting worse everyday because you and your surroundings are actually changing.
You are getting older, and if you don’t push yourself to change for the better, the cells in your body get weaker. It’s just like how I lost my muscle.
If we don’t get stronger, we get weaker.
That is the law of physics. Things naturally get into disorder.
A clean room never stays clean. It naturally becomes a mess.
A nicely trimmed garden doesn’t stay neat and trimmed for long. The grass and bushes grow, and weeds come out.
Even the roof on your house doesn’t stay constant. It wears down everyday from the weather, and is getting worse.
In our natural state, if we don’t make an effort to get stronger, we get weaker every day.
The Status Quo is never good because things are never constant. We just can’t perceive the small, invisible changes that are occuring.
We Live in the Invisible World
We are blind to what is happening to us because the changes are too small for us to see. You often can’t tell you are getting better or worse.
When you do notice you are getting worse, it’s usually too late.
It’s like the athlete that realizes he is slower this season because he got lazy during the offseason. The change happened weeks and months ago, but by the time he realizes it, he has lost his edge already and someone has replaced him.
It’s like me. By the time I stepped on the scale and realized what had happened, it was too late already. I had lost my muscle mass already.
We Quit Way Too Quickly
One of the reasons people quit pursuing their goals is because they fail to see the positive changes that are happening to them.
A great example is the MLM distributors that quit too quickly because they decide that they can’t be successful in network marketing.
They quit because they can’t see themselves having the skills to become successful without realizing that they are getting better. They can’t see their own positive change. It is invisible to them.
I had a pathetic start in my MLM career. It took me more than 42 people to get someone to finally decide to join me. I had no sales or marketing skills, and I was shy and scared to talk to people.
In other words, I was awful and pathetic, but I wasn’t pathetic the entire time.
I was probably really bad on the phone for the first 10 people to whom I spoke, but by the time I talked to over 30 people, I was getting close to sponsoring my first person. I just couldn’t close the deal.
Throughout the prospecting process, I got better from the first person to the 41st person. Then things finally clicked, and I “got it” on the 42nd person.
Changes Are Happening Every Second
Whether we attempt to change or not, we are changing every second.
We are either getting better or worse.
The cells in our body are literally changing at this second.
We just don’t see the invisible.
Helpful Tip: What We Can Do
How do we know if we are changing for the better or not?
One helpful tip is to measure and track your performance.
If you want to maintain a healthy weight, make sure you weigh yourself every day.
If you want to be a top athlete, make sure you measure your performance every game.
If you want to be successful in business, you must track the key numbers daily.
If you are an MLM distributor and want to know whether you are getting better at prospecting or not, you must track the number of new people you talk to, the number of appointments you set, and the sales you get.
Things can improve only through tracking.
What doesn’t get measured can’t be improved.
Record What You Track
Make sure you create a spreadsheet to record your numbers.
Just looking up the numbers is not good enough because the changes are too small for you to realize what is actually happening.
You must write them down.
When you measure and track your performance religiously, you will be able to see the trends that are invisible, the ones that are not obvious.
What You Need to Track
What do you need to start tracking?
The answer to that question depends on what you’re seeking to improve.
I track many business numbers, but one of the things I started to track this year is my weight.
I want to get back to my pre-injury weight.
I’ve gained two pounds of muscle back, and it hasn’t been easy for my body type. It’s going to take a while before I gain my eight pounds of muscle back.
It would have been MUCH easier to just track and prevent this from happening in the first place. That’s why it’s so important to measure and record. If I was tracking my weight I would have notice the loss of muscle much sooner.
Tracking helps us see the invisible changes because when we do finally realize what has happened to us, it is usually too late and it takes much more effort to get back on track.
What will you start to track this week?
